ARTICLE: Choosing an Officiant for Your Wedding Ceremony

Choosing a Wedding Ceremony Officiant
By Reverend Paul Scholl

It's time to choose an officiant for your special day. How do you determine who's right for you? How do you find someone who will help bring joy and magic to your wedding?

Before contacting any local officiants, take the time to sit down with your fiancé and make a few decisions. Do you want it short, yet romantic? Do you want it traditional? Do you want to include something extra to make your ceremony unique? Will family or friends participate? It is your day, so let your dreams and wishes run free.

Making a few decisions prior to contacting a minister allows each minister that you contact to quickly determine if they can provide the kind of ceremony you're creating. Most ministers enjoy helping design wedding ceremonies, but be sure to ask in advance if there is an extra fee for this guidance. If you're interested in pre-marital counseling, be sure to ask about that during your initial conversation.

Ministers understand that you'll want to interview them to determine if they're the right match for your wedding, so have a few questions and details prepared before you start making phone inquiries. Once you find someone who feels "right" over the telephone, arrange an in-person meeting.

Most important, remember that your sacred ceremony is for the two of you, so choose a minister who relates to and honors your wishes. Make sure he or she is committed to helping you create a special event. It is a day you will hold dear for the rest of your lives. Make a choice to create a magical event and you shall have it!
